Utah Medical Waste Loophole, May Lead to Changes

Untreated medical waste dumped at the local landfill brings demands for change

The Administrative Control Board of the Washington County Solid Waste Special Service District #1 learned that the state of Utah allows up to 200 pounds of untreated medical waste could dumped in the landfill, the reaction were varied and passionate.

A Utah based medical waste processing company decried both the public hazards of such practices, as well as the unfairness of transporters taking advantage of the loophole. Policy makers who were equally concerned, expressed worry about overriding the state law, especially when such an aggressive move would favor a single processor.
